SEND
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At Childwall Church of England Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child is valued, included and supported to achieve their full potential. We believe that all children, regardless of need or ability, should have access to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum within a caring and inclusive environment.
We work in close partnership with pupils, parents, carers and external professionals to identify needs early and provide appropriate support so that children can flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
What Do We Mean by SEND?
A child or young person is identified as having Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) if they have a learning difficulty or disability that requires additional or different provision to be made for them.
This may include difficulties related to:
- Communication and interaction
- Cognition and learning
- Social, emotional and mental health
- Sensory and/or physical needs
Our SEND Approach
We follow the principles set out in the SEND Code of Practice, ensuring that provision is:
- Child-centred
- Inclusive
- Needs-led
- Aimed at promoting independence and progress
Support for pupils with SEND is provided through a graduated approach:
- Assess – identifying the child’s needs
- Plan – agreeing support and strategies
- Do – putting provision in place
- Review – evaluating progress and next steps
This cycle is reviewed regularly in partnership with parents and carers.
How We Support Pupils with SEND
Support may include:
- High-quality classroom teaching with appropriate adaptations
- Targeted small-group or individual interventions
- Adaptations to teaching strategies, resources or the learning environment
- Support from trained teaching assistants
- Advice and involvement from external agencies such as Speech and Language Therapy, Educational Psychology or Health Services
Where appropriate, some pupils may have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), which sets out longer-term needs and provision.
Working with Parents and Carers
We recognise that parents and carers know their children best and play a vital role in supporting learning and development. We are committed to working in close partnership with families through:
- Regular communication and meetings
- Review of support plans and outcomes
- Involvement in decision-making about provision
If you have concerns about your child’s learning or development, we encourage you to speak to your child’s class teacher in the first instance.
